WHAT IS SMARTPATH?

TripStop (Articulated Concrete Jointing System) combined with BarChip (Macro Synthetic Fibre – MSF) is SmartPath.

Footpaths, Shared Paths and Cycleways treated with TripStop have been accommodating (not resisting) tree roots, contraction, expansion, soil heave, soil subsidence and load for 21 years with not one single reported failure. BarChip has been successfully reinforcing pavements, tunnels, high speed rail track slabs, precast elements and industrial flooring worldwide for more than 20 years.

BarChip is a specific type of structural synthetic fibre. It is a non-corrosive reinforcing system specifically designed for low-strength concrete and optimised for use in residential paving works.

Every Slab Joined and Separated and Reinforced

Because every slab is simultaneously joined and separated with TripStop, and reinforced with BarChip, each panel is much more resilient to damage from load.

Not only is each slab 3-dimensionally reinforced, providing increased flexural capacity and enhanced crack control, it also benefits from the TripStop joint accommodating its movement up and down independent of adjoining slabs, further increasing its capacity to absorb load.

While TripStop works reliably with steel mesh, we believe BarChip MSF is a better, stronger, more sustainable reinforcement solution.

When used together, TripStop and MSF deliver the ultimate sustainable path. TripStop’s unique articulated joint prevents slab displacement while the BarChip MSF makes the concrete more durable.

The structural BarChip is mixed into the concrete before pouring, which results in even distribution of the fibres throughout the slab. This allows the MSF to contain cracking more effectively than steel mesh. But that’s just one of the advantages it offers.

Lower carbon emissions

MSF produces 70% less carbon emissions during manufacturing than the equivalent quantity of steel mesh. (5kg of MSF replaces 30kg of steel).

Greater tensile strength

MSF outperforms steel mesh in concrete, so footpaths and cycleways don’t fail.

Easier transport and storage

Steel mesh is bulky and heavy, whereas MSF is small and lightweight, making it easier and cheaper to transport, handle and store.

Faster installation

Unlike steel mesh, MSF doesn’t require any cutting to size or careful manual positioning – it’s mixed into the concrete before arriving on site, which makes installation faster.

No concrete cancer risk

When concrete that’s reinforced with steel mesh cracks, the steel corrodes, which results in concrete cancer – MSF is corrosion-free, so this risk is eliminated.

Cheaper than steel mesh

Reinforcing with MSF costs less than reinforcing with steel mesh.
